Carrie [Visitor]
I love your idea of doing a folklore for each continent. You could stick with the icey landscape of the present day Antartica; or, you can imagine what the land was like before it became frozen over. It must have had its own indigeous animals, and perhaps even an ancient civilization or two. We never know now since everything is covered with ice. Enjoy the process :)

Thanks!

I sent most of the queries for "Princess" by email - just with a synopsis and let them know they could find the script on my website or I could send them a hard copy. I figured it's cheap, not very intrusive, and you just never know.

The range of reasons I received for a "No" amused me sometimes - for some the cast was too big, for others too small. One said they had done a girl-centered story this year and so wanted a boy-centered one next year. My favorite was from a small children's theater that essentially said "this isn't the kid of play we do." Ummm...?

First of all - I am so jealous - because you finished another draft. Whoo and yay. Sometimes a play is a bridge - to another play. It's not just an exercise but a means of getting somewhere else. And soemtimes that particular play comes back to you in all its rightness. I am writing slower than usual - but it doesn't mean it isn't horrid! It's just horribly slow! I think the premise of your play could be a dark comedy, a total farce, a satire or dramedy. What's interesting is you don't know.... yet. But I bet it will be something.

I wound up reading very few of the plays (and not yours) so didn't give iany nput. Committee means varying people with wildy divergent tastes weigh in. And there are different people each year. It is indeed maddening to see the different reactions to one play of mine. As I struggle with the Brothers Grimm play ... really struggling... it always comes down to "write what you want to write." When it's good, it finds it rightful home.

After getting into festivals all through the USA, I finally get one in the Twin Cities - and then what happens? They want to change 75% of the play. (And you picked it, why???) So while it's "nice" to have a production close to home - it's better to find the right home for your play.

It is indeed! And I have to constantly remind myself that it IS subjective and not necessarily a comment on the piece. Maddening though when a piece doesn't do as well as other pieces that aren't as good (this is my third entry, and I think the best, in Lakeshore's contest over the years, and yet it is the first time I didn't make the semi-final cut). But as always, nothing to do but keep plugging!

You should, that's be a great idea! Our next family program is on November 21st. It's called xplorchestra! and is a little different than this (longer concert geared for older kids, and I don't think any crafts), but is a little more theatrical in the sense that they put more of a storyline to it.

I love that SPCO has a family event like that. I'd like a tortoise puppet...
I should cover that for the Examiner.

This is getting so excited as the Fringe nears. I am even a wee bit envious of your participation in the Fringe - even though I know I have no interest. Just jumping on the excitement bandwagon. Best of luck July 7th! It's sort of like a preview or a sneak-peek and a very good idea!

Hi David, thanks for your comments! Developing the script has probably been the biggest challenge for me in this process. I wanted to take physics concepts and present them in a theatrical way, making them as interesting as possible for non-scientists, and finding a way to do that which also contains a fun story has definitely proved challenging. I've written a number of other plays and have done a lot of acting which certainly helped, but now that I'm in rehearsals working with the non-speaking character (I play 2 different characters) has been an acting challenge as I try to make the performance interesting without words. I also set myself up with some interesting technical challenges. :-)

Good luck with your own show, it sounds very exciting! Who is your show based on? Halifax sounds like a beautiful place to do a Fringe show; if only I had the vacation time to bring my show there as well. :-)

Hi James,

Always good to find another theatre blog.

I'm writing a one man show for the Fringe Fest coming up in Halifax this September. I have a lot of challenges to meet: 1) I've never written a play, 2) I haven't acted (besides auditons) since graduating from Theatre school 4 years ago, 3) No director, no SM, so funding. Wow, the more I describe it, the crazier it seems.

I'm doing it anyway.

My questions is: what has been your biggest challenge so far in developing you one-man show? My show is based on the life a local historical figure, so I'm lucky enough to already have a story. I'm trying to focus on making that existing story dramatic and interesting.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Dan

Exciting... and terrifying too! But it is the risk that makes it all worthwhile.

Best of luck during the rehearsal period. May many things come to fruition. I know from page to stage is not seamless! But it can be exciting.

That would be me - complicating an answer. I remember overthinking of every clue looking for the medallion in St. Paul. (Once upon a time.) Sounds like great fun!

You are busy - good to take time out to celebrate. I wonder who did the costumes for SEUSSICAL. Look forward to the updates as your Fringe show moves forward.

I love three - but maybe the action is not clear - but love it. Then two. But you can't go wrong with 21... maybe do them all and see what elicits the most reaction. (I am so unhelpful)

Oh man, I totally thought #1...then I scrolled down to #3...now I don't know. 3 if you're going for "artsy"...1 if you're going for "Schrödinger's Cat Must Die!" I'm sorry if that is completely unhelpful. They are all great pics. I'm glad you and Kelly have such fun!

It is DEFINITELY a relief and I'm very glad you will both be there! Part of me is still terrified at the idea of doing a show that is just me. For an hour. But it's time to make the leap!

Jim! I couldn't agree more with your Greenie sentiments! I hadn't heard about Ali...we'll have to get the scoop on that one. And to think...those kids almost didn't even know they could audition! Last night I got a call from Jan offering me the role of God in the 10 minute she's directing...hmmm...I accepted. It plays out well...and should be a lot of fun.
